The new generation of the Audi A4 are the perfect combination of technology and aesthetics.
The all-new A4 Saloon is slightly longer and wider than the previous model, at 4.726m and 1.842m respectively, yet still classifies itself as the lowest in height in the premium segment. The A4 Saloon is almost identical. The elegantly sporty appearance of the A4 Saloon and Avant has horizontal lines and a wrap-around hood that emphasises the car's width while the single frame grille is the most dominating feature.
Sitting in the A4 and A4 Avant it's evident that the shoulder width and head clearance for both the driver and front-passanger has been increased along with overall interior length and rear legroom offering all passengers a feeling of real spaciousness.
The design further enhances this feeling with clear architecture and use of horizontal lines. The low dashboard almost appears as if it's floating while the upper edgers border the interior in a wrap-around style, without constricting the driver or passengers.
Technology-wise, the main focus is on the optional Audi virtual cockpit and MMI control. Audi virtual cockpit features a 12.3-inch LCD screen that displays the most important information in brilliant detail. The MMI control concept in the centre console acts as the main control element. The top-end infotainment system, MMI navigation plus with MMI touch, has a control system with logic similar to that of a smartphone and includes and intelligent free-text search function.
Customers that order MMI Navigation plus will also enjoy the Audi connect hardware module which connects the A4 and A4 Avant with the Internet via high speed LTE or 4G network allowing passengers to take advantage of a wifi hotspot while the driver can access Audi connect.
The brand new Audi smartphone interface and Audi phone box connects smartphones to the on-board antenna and charges them while also integrating iOS and Android into the Audi MMI.
The all-new A4 also includes a more natural voice-control system that understands normal everyday language such as "I'm hungry - bring me to the nearest restaurant".
Lighter and more efficient
Although the A4's dimensions have grown it's weight has gone down significantly compared to the previous models. The body of the new Audi models is one of the lightest in its class with the A4 reducing it's weight by up to 120kg, depending on the engine.
The Audi A4 and A4 Avant will be available in a choice of three TFSI and four TDI engines with an increased power output ranging from 150hp to 272hp. Fuel consumption has been reduced by up to 21%, for example the A4 2.0 TDI ultra has fuel consumption of just 3.7 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 95g/km. The corresponsing A4 Avant model has fuel consumption of 3.8 litres per 100km and CO2 emissions of 99g/km.
The all-new A4's handling is sporty and performance oriented but with a focus on comfort. The suspension and steering help filter out disturbances such as uneven road surfaces and this performance is down to the redevelopment of the five-link axles and electromechanical power steering, meaning they are exceptionally light. Additional options include dynamic steering, which can vary its ration according to the car's speed and steering angle, and suspension with adjustable shock absorbers allowing the driver to choose between sports or comfort settings. These suspension settings are included in the Audi drive select driving-dynamics system, which is standard equipment for mdels with engines of 190hp or above.
The all-new Audi A4 and Audi A4 Avant will launch in Ireland in November 2015 with standard equipment even more comprehensive than that of the previous model. Full Irish equipment and pricing information is due to be announced in the coming weeks.
