Motoring publication Auto Express has followed their in-depth review of the new Audi S3 Saloon with a challenge: pitting it directly against a Mercedes-Benz CLA 45 AMG.
The fact that the model contends with a high-performance Mercedes-AMG in the first place should signal the impressive capabilities of the Audi saloon.
On practicality and styling, the S3 emerged victorious. It claims more personal space than the CLA, and a greater sense of room and airiness in the cabin. From the outside, the Audi looks every inch the traditional three-box saloon, with a professional and classy atmosphere.
There isn't much to separate the two cars when it comes to road performance. The S3 is fitted with a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine at 296bhp. It's electronically limited to a top speed of 155mph, and completes the 0-60mph sprint within six seconds.
To close the review, Auto Express directly compared the key figures. The Audi has a more cost-effective price tag than the Mercedes-Benz, and claims lower annual fuel and tax costs based on the reviewer's comparison. The example fixed-price servicing plan also works out as more affordable for owners over a three-year period.
The S3 also scored higher in Euro NCAP safety tests for adult occupant protection and child occupant protection making it a highly capable all-rounder. It's equipped with seven surrounding airbags.
